Engaging Physicians as Collaborators in Research

About this Webinar

Engaging physicians as collaborators on research teams can be a daunting process for many academic researchers. Although researchers see great value in working with physicians, they may be unsure of how to approach them or how to engage them in a meaningful way. In this webinar, we hope to illuminate questions you may have about working with physicians, including: setting expectations about communication, compensation and workload, working with community-based and rural physicians, where to access physicians, and how to build a meaningful and mutually beneficial collaboration.

Presented by:

Dr. David Snadden is a Professor, Department of Family Practice, UBC and the Rural Doctors’ UBC Chair in Rural Health. He graduated from Dundee University and was a rural family physician in the Highlands of Scotland before entering an academic position in Scotland after a sabbatical year at Western University. He came to Canada in 2003 to lead the development of the Northern Medical Program, a distributed site of the Faculty of Medicine at UBC, and from 2011 to 2016 was the Executive Associate Dean Education for the Faculty.

Dr. Mei-ling Wiedmeyer is a family planning provider at several family planning clinics in Vancouver, as well as a family physician at the Umbrella Multicultural Health Co-operative. In addition to clinical work, she is a Clinical Assistant Professor at UBC’s Department of Family Practice, and does research with the Centre for Gender and Sexual Health Equity (CGSHE). She is currently part of the research team for the IRIS project at CGSHE, specifically evaluating how language barriers and service delivery environments shape access to sexual and reproductive health care for im/migrant women in British Columbia.
